The Twilight saga - Stephanie Meyer

For an overhyped tween sensation, I was suprised how easily i was drawn in. Not that Ive written anything longer than an essay before, you can tell A) that this is Meyers first attempt at a book, and B) that half way through book two she has run out of material and is making it up on the spot. Luckily the eye candy in the movies make up for the terrible storyline.

Seriously? Boring, plain girl meets sexy vampire, vampire falls in love, buff werewolf half the age of bland girl also falls in love with her and a fight begins. Really? I mean REALLY???

I suppose if i was a bland looking girl, living in a dead beat cold dark town with a Father obsessed with sports it may be a dream come true. But if a gorgeous vampire (and/or R Pattz) in love with me, I dont think i could wait three novels before getting more than a peck on the cheek. I must sound like a bit of a whore here, but really? An 18 year old girl must want more than a kiss.

Despite all my vampire bashing, I still cant wait for the third movie to come out.

I really do not understand how this book became movie status? I love reading fictional interpretations of WWII and having visited Auchwitz myself, i expected more from this novel.

The author writes from the point of view of a young boy, so the language used is in line with the narrator, however its not the most interesting tale. As an account of the little boy being a Nazi soldiers's son, and his interactions with a POW, this book may have been better developed as a picture book. It felt more like a short story, and I think it took me an hour or so to read. Yes I cried, but theres rarely a book that doesnt invoke tears in me.

If you want a quick, easy, no brainer read... go for it, otherwise try Marion Keyes. Really.

The Alchemist - Paulo Coelho

The Alchemist follows the story of Santiago (a trainee priest come shepherd come traveller) following his own Personal Legend. Personal Legend? Well I interpreted the book as being about a naive kid looking for the meaning of life. There are numerous valid points that Coelho makes about life, hopes, dreams, danger and love. Without giving away the plot, there is a reason this book is put down as a classic. Coelho's writing is great, although the font in my copy was a tad small or my liking. Who cares, just read it.

The Great Railway Bazaar - Paul Theroux

Ok, I think i am my fathers daughter. You see my dad is a bit of a train fanatic. I wouldnt call myself a fanatic, actually, nothing of the sort. But i do like trains, if you get me. I prefer them to buses, planes, car, possibly donkey but definately not elephant.

So this piece of travel writing by Mr Theroux tells of the time he travelled from london and back via europe, the middle east, asia, and russia. Considering I really really really want to take the trans siberian express one day (a week or so train journey through russia/china), i really liked this book. It takes a good part of the year to travel this route and each train ride is a completely different experience from the last.

Makes me quite excited about travelling!
